Woodland Tails Along the Snowy Pawtomac River Trail
Yesterday's snowstorm created man-made chaos, when it slammed the northeastern US region hard during peak rush hour; and cars without proper snow tires and drivers without experience blocked every major artery in the NE. It was the perfect storm for commuters nightmare.
Exhausted after inching 8 miles in 4 hours that night, Kyra took me outside for some needed stress relief the next morning (she'll use any reason to go swimming).
And today, we chose for more natural order and hiked along a snowy, but scenic Pawtomic River Trail to visit her favorite wintery friends and a doggy dip at her favorite watering hole. ...
And today, we chose for more natural order and hiked along a snowy, but scenic Pawtomic River Trail to visit her favorite wintery friends and a doggy dip at her favorite watering hole. ...
Eager to break into fresh pawder, Kyra leaped forward onto the Pawtomac River Trail ...
Kyra first meets "Sammy the Snowy Woodpecker", who greets her with a drummmmmada-da-da roll.
Kyra's hollers back, "See at the River, Sammy!"
One mile into the Pawtomac River Trail, "Earle the Eastern Bluebird" challenges Kyra in a race to the river ...
Kyra immediately starts pulling hard, ... as the fresh and crisp smell of the river's water fills the air)
Another one-half mile trek later, Kyra hears the distinct and loud thumping beat of "Peter the Piliated Woodpecker" (dude's a hard rocker), who's appetite for grubs and ants along the withered and felled trees at the river banks makes her more eager to pull even harder...
Kyra even locates Dancer and Prancer foraging at their vacation resort (before next Christmas); and she continued to race to the river to beat Earl. ...
From the next bend on the trail, Kyra can finally see the river;
.... but starts getting hungry for some reason.
But Kyra's desire to paddle was stronger,... and continued to race to the river banks. ...
Only to realize in utter disappointment, ....
that her swimming pool entrance into the river banks was completely frozen. ...

Kyra - Quest for the Eagle's Nest (A Picture Story)
Feeling a little guilty for her diminutive role in deforestation, Kyra decides to emBaRk on a quest to return her favorite sacred American Sycamore branch (that she borrowed) to the great Eagle's Nest at Mason Neck! ...
With the eagles scent still strong, Kyra's journey trekked her to the shores of the Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia ...
She knew that the eagles nest was very close! Only Kyra wondered, ...
What does an eagle looks like?? :/
Undaunted, Kyra remained doggedly determined to find the great Eagles Nest of Mason Neck and return its sacred Sycamore branch to the majestic bald eagle ! ...
Hmmm, but Kyra wondered, ... "Do eagles swim?"
These American Coots cacooted to Kyra to check out the great marsh, instead; ... and to remind the magestic bald eagle to return one of their cousins that it snatched earlier in the day. ... ;)
Kyra's journey led her directly into the Great Marsh of Mason Neck!
Rich in fish, birds and wildlife - she reasoned, "The Eagle's Nest must be close by!!" ...
Kyra started to look and sniff all around. Looking down, along the marshy ground, she discovers a bird foraging aside a fallen Sycamore tree.
Was this the magestic bald eagle who owned the sacred Sycamore branch?
But this Eastern Towhee quirked to Kyra, "Yo, ... Ding-Dawg! Seriously!! Does it look like I can fish for bass or trout; or carry a sacred Sycamore stick with this beak!!??"
The Towhee then advised Kyra that she look even higher for the majestic eagle, then warned her not to tread through her dining room with her dirty paws again! ...
With this fresh lead, Kyra continued on her quest - trodding ever deeper and sniffing ever higher into the Great Marsh for the scent of the majestic bald eagle.
Then, she suddenly discovered another bird perching along a blueberry bush.
Could this be the majestic eagle?? ...
But the Savannah Sparrow tweeted, "My dear Kyra, I do declare! Pup, does it look like I can nest comfortably on that branch!!!??"
Savannah then added, "Now, You go'on yonder and look a LOT higher! But if you find me some sweet berries along the way, ... kindly give me a'holler!" ;)
Not discouraged, Kyra continued to look even higher!! ...
Then suddenly, large dark bird with white head flew over the forests of the Great Marsh ...
Kyra knew that this had to be the majestic bald eagle - its scent was absolute! :)
Instinctively, she gave chase! Kyra's long journey (~7 dog hours) to return the lost Sycamore branch to the great Eagles Nest on Mason Neck was finally nearing completion! ...
The majestic bald eagle tipped its wing in acknowledgement, pleased that Kyra had chosen to return its sacred Sycamore branch. With his characteric 'peal call' he instructed, "Follow me, young Kyra!"; and personally guided Kyra to the Great Eagle's Nest ! :)
The bald eagle then guided Kyra over the expansive cove to its Eagles Nest on the other side. He was eager to present the Misses with an upgrade the nest for renovations with the sacred Sycamore branch!
With the nest now sight (and eager for a swim), Kyra enthusiastically charged into the cove following the majestic eagle towards the great Eagles Nest of Mason Neck!
Then suddenly, ... Kyra stopped chase!! :/
After all her tireless efforts to return the sacred Sycamore branch, ... Kyra turned back toward the Great Marsh, ...away from the Eagles Nest!
The magestic eagle could only stare in wonderment!
Why? :/
Apparently, Kyra likes the sacred Sycamore branch even more than the magestic eagle;
... and eventually, chewed it down to pieces. :b
